How does Risperdal work?
The mechanism of action is caused by action on dopamine, serotonin, adreno and histamine receptors of nerve cells. Due to the fact that many endogenous, organic mental diseases have changed the functions of these receptor systems, riperidone has a wide enough therapeutic effect:
- On productive symptoms of psychosis and schizophrenia (delirium and hallucinations);
- On negative symptoms - apathy, isolation, lack of emotions, autism;
- Reduces the pathologically high mood (mania);
- Has a soothing, antianxiety, sleeping pills effect;
- Reduces (or removes) aggression, auto-aggression;
- Has an antisuicidal effect;
- Reduces the pathological urge to take drugs, alcohol in addiction;
- Removes obsessive thoughts, actions and feelings.

Symptoms
Drowsiness, sedation, tachycardia, arterial hypotension, extrapyramid symptoms. Lengthening of the QT interval and seizures were observed. Bidirectional ventricular tachycardia was observed in the joint administration of an increased dose of Risperidone and Paroxetine.
In case of acute overdose the possibility of overdose from taking several drugs should be considered.Treatment
Free airway access should be achieved and maintained to ensure adequate oxygen supply and ventilation. Stomach washing (after intubation, if the patient is unconscious) and taking activated carbon together with a laxative should be done only if the drug was taken no more than one hour ago. ECG monitoring for possible arrhythmias should be started immediately.
There is no specific antidote and appropriate symptomatic therapy should be carried out. Arterial hypotension and vascular collapse should be eliminated with intravenous fluid infusions and/or sympathomimetic drugs. If severe extrapyramid symptoms develop, anticholinergic drugs should be prescribed. Continued medical observation and monitoring should be continued until symptoms of intoxication disappear.
On average a positive effect is observed after 4 weeks of Rispedral administration.
First of all, you should consult your doctor before reducing the dose of Rispedral. You must not stop taking a drug abruptly, there is a high possibilty of occurence of withdrawal symptoms. It is necessary to reduce the dose slowly.
